La Louisiane: Robert Rauschenberg's Sister, Janet Begneaud, on the Artists' Ties to Lafayette

Robert Rauschenberg revolutionized contemporary art from his studios in New York City and Captiva, Florida, but his creative vision remained deeply connected to Lafayette, Louisiana—his adoptive hometown where his family relocated in the 1950s.

In this special centennial celebration episode of La Louisiane, we examine Rauschenberg's profound influence on American art and explore his often-overlooked Louisiana roots.

We're joined by two remarkable guests:

  • Janet Begneaud, Rauschenberg's sister and longtime Lafayette arts advocate, shares personal insight into the artist's formative years and enduring family bonds
  • Molly Rowe, executive director of the Hilliard Art Museum at UL Lafayette, analyzes his revolutionary approach to mixing mediums and disciplines and how it has influenced the way museums approach art

At the center of our conversation: "Autobiography," one of Rauschenberg's most intimate works, currently on display as part of the Hilliard's permanent collection.

Rauschenberg collapsed the distinctions between high art and vernacular culture, between painting and sculpture, between art and life itself. Understanding his Louisiana connection reveals new dimensions of an artist who fundamentally altered how we encounter contemporary art.
