Philip Gould on capturing "Louisiana from the Sky"

Photographer Philip Gould joins La Louisiane managing editor Marie Elizabeth Oliver for a conversation about "Louisiana from the Sky," his 20th photography book, now available from UL Press.

In this episode of La Louisiane from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Gould discusses how aerial and drone photography offered a new perspective on a state he has documented for decades. Using what he describes as a “tripod in the sky,” Gould captures bird’s-eye views of Louisiana’s landscapes — from small-town festivals and familiar landmarks to rarely seen perspectives of swamps, prairies and working environments.

Gould, who has photographed Louisiana since the 1970s, reflects on how this project differs from his previous work, why the state continues to surprise him and what he hopes audiences will take away from this collection of images. The conversation explores visual storytelling, sense of place and how photography can deepen understanding of Louisiana’s culture and geography.

Marie Elizabeth Oliver is the managing editor of La Louisiane, the official magazine of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
