Louisianians will not be playing daily fantasy sports or betting on games outright anytime soon, after the final chaotic minutes of the legislative session sank both efforts.

Lawmakers worked to the bitter end of the legislative session Thursday to address the two biggest remaining issues: the state’s next budget and the future of fantasy sports gaming in Louisiana.

An effort to legalize sports betting in Louisiana came to an end in the Legislature Tuesday, after the bill was heavily amended and ultimately defeated in a House committee.

A bill to legalize betting on professional and college sports in Louisiana casinos started advancing in the Senate Tuesday.

“It’s not a big money maker, but if we don’t do it, it puts us at a distinct disadvantage,” Senator Danny Martiny (R-Metairie) told members of a Senate judiciary committee.

State Senator Danny Martiny (R-Metairie) will again push the Legislature to legalize sports betting in Louisiana.

Like it or not, he says, the industry is already operating in the state, just under the table.
