fy 2020 budget

Lawmakers worked to the bitter end of the legislative session Thursday to address the two biggest remaining issues: the state’s next budget and the future of fantasy sports gaming in Louisiana.

A Senate committee will have its chance to make changes to the state’s next budget today. Jay Dardenne, Governor John Bel Edwards’ top budget advisor, told members of the Senate Finance committee last week that most of the changes adopted by the House are in line with the administration’s proposals.

House Republicans are looking to give Louisiana teachers a larger pay raise than expected next year, as lawmakers decide how to spend $119 million in extra revenue.

Speaker of the House Taylor Barras (R-New Iberia) agreed Wednesday to approve $119 million dollars in additional state revenue for next fiscal year, ending a significant stalemate between Governor John Bel Edwards and Republican leaders in the House.

Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Marketa Walters says the state’s food stamp program is at risk if a $13 million funding gap isn’t filled in next year’s budget.
