Friday, October 21, 2022A turning point in classical music. Let us take you on a joyous journey to where it all began – Italy – the birthplace of the orchestra and the Baroque classical era. Considered to be the one of the most influential periods for modern western music, the Baroque style is marked by fuller and more complex musical compositions, including multiple independent melody lines, performed simultaneously by different instruments, and often incorporating voices, just as we see in modern symphonic presentations. Featuring guest artists Giancarlo De Lorenzo (Italy), as conductor, and soloist Drago? Filip, ASO’s principal cellist.

NOVEMBER 4-5, 202215th annual festival, held live this year in Grand Coteau, is a FREE festival featuring three award-winning writers. These writers provide a Community Reading on Friday and Writing Workshops on Saturday. Also on Saturday, a Community Stage at Thensted Center is open to all writers and performers. Youth Creative Writing Contest winners read their works and receive awards.. Local students circulate through Grand Coteau and Sunset performing "Drive By Poetry", dramatic readings of works by the visiting writers."

Celebrate the history of Grand Coteau and a traditional Louisiana treat called the sweet dough pie. Every year, pastry chefs and home cooks vie to be the best in the sweet dough pie contest where the public is the judge. A large variety of pies are available for purchase. Some favorites include fig, custard, lemon, blackberry, and other local, seasonal ingredients. Browse through over 100 vendors with art, handmade items, flowers and herbs, custom furniture, indoor and outdoor decor, and more.

Soft opening will be held Saturday, November 12, from 2-4 p.m. at the Shadows Visitor's Center in New Iberia.

Santa Claus is coming to town during the annual Light up the Lake Christmas Celebration on Saturday, November 26. This year’s event will include a Holiday Art Walk Downtown hosted by the Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Festivities will move to the Lake Charles Civic Center grounds at 3:30 p.m. with a Christmas concert on the lakefront, lighting ceremony and fireworks extravaganza. Lake Charles Toyota, Entergy, Visit Lake Charles and McNeese Banners Series are the presenting sponsor for this year’s events.

The Department of Visual Arts' Ceramics Students at the University of Louisiana Lafayette brings back their 18th annual Pottery Sale! The sale will begin Thursday, December 8, from 7-10 p.m. at Fletcher Hall, and will continue Saturday, December 10th, from 10-6 p.m. This is a great way to get a handmade gift for those on your Christmas list, and see the beautiful works of art created by the UL students! Support from this event will assist in sending the ceramic students to the most important ceramics conference in the country.
