Works will include that of visionary tango composer, Astor Piazzolla, a musical game changer of the 20th Century, who elevated the musical form of tango from the red-light districts of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to be performed on some of the world’s most prestigious concert stages. The use of saxophone in classical music is still a relatively new concept, and the instrument continues to be an uncommon fixture in the symphony – creating a unique and exciting experience for the audience. Featuring South African guest artist, Karèn Devroop on saxophone.
  • Celebrate and learn about the Black History of Mardi Gras at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. Mardi Gras would not be as rich without the influence of our black and brown communities. Experience intricate costumes, memorabilia and photographs, and histories of our Louisiana Krewes. This elaborate display is on loan from numerous Krewe collections and the Imperial Calcasieu Mardi Gras Museum.The Opening Reception for this exciting exhibit will be held on January 20th from 6-8 pm. Here you’ll be able to sample an array of SWLA’s local favorite King Cakes! You’ll also get another chance to visit Eddie Mormon’s Flora and Fauna of Louisiana art exhibit. This event is free and open to the public. Invite your friends and families and party the evening away!

  • Les Vues, the free film series at Vermilionville is back! The first selection for 2023 is a must-see. Winner of the Louisiana Filmmaker Award, Royce Osborn’s All on A Mardi Gras Day tells the story of New Orleans’ black carnival, from Congo Square to post-Katrina. This award-winning documentary mixes interviews with Big Chiefs, Zulu Kings and other carnival maskers with amazing archival footage and classic New Orleans music. The free film runs an hour, and after the film, Alton “Tiger” Armstrong will speak on his experiences as Big Chief of the Lafayette Mardi Gras Indians.
