A bill to ban abortions in Louisiana after a fetal heartbeat can be detected is headed to Governor John Bel Edwards’ desk, after the Louisiana Legislature overwhelmingly gave final approval Wednesday. 

An effort to legalize sports betting in Louisiana came to an end in the Legislature Tuesday, after the bill was heavily amended and ultimately defeated in a House committee. 

A party line vote killed a bill Monday that would have made certain individuals income tax data available to the state’s legislative auditor. 

A Senate committee will have its chance to make changes to the state’s next budget today. Jay Dardenne, Governor John Bel Edwards’ top budget advisor, told members of the Senate Finance committee last week that most of the changes adopted by the House are in line with the administration’s proposals. 

The Louisiana House backed a proposal Thursday to begin rolling back the temporary sales tax extension that was the solution to last year’s budget deficit. That compromise took several special sessions to reach.
