This week Bayou to Beltway speaks with Norris Henderson and Ed Tarpley about the non-unanimous jury issue on the ballot November 6.
Norris Henderson is statewide director of the Unanimous Jury Coalition while Ed Tarpley is an attorney in Alexandria and a former DA for Grant Parish. They are advocating in favor of a Constitutional Amendment that would require unanimous jury verdicts in felony cases. Should this Amendment pass, it would mean that Louisiana had joined with 49 other states in requiring this level of certainty. We discuss the origin of Louisiana's unique law, the reason for the emergence of this issue now, and what passage would mean for the many who serve time despite not being found guilty by 12 of their peers.
