Wallis Watkins

Wallis Watkins is a Baton Rouge native. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy from Louisiana State University in 2013. Soon after, she joined WRKF as an intern and is now reporting on health and health policy for Louisiana's Prescription.

The Louisiana House backed a proposal Thursday to begin rolling back the temporary sales tax extension that was the solution to last year’s budget deficit. That compromise took several special sessions to reach. 

A legislative effort to let chemical plants and other industrial companies keep certain environmental violations secret ended Wednesday, after the bill’s author pulled the legislation. 

For the fourth year in a row, an effort to increase the minimum wage in Louisiana was unsuccessful Tuesday. 

A bill to raise the state’s gas tax was shelved Monday, as the bill’s author, Representative Steve Carter (R-Baton Rouge), pointed to the difficulty of trying to raise taxes in an election year. 

A House committee will get its turn Monday on a bill that would exempt diapers and feminine hygiene products from state sales tax.
