With gas prices as high as they are, and parking spots limited on the University's campus, a lot
of students use old fashioned methods of transportation. Bicyclists can be seen all around UL
Lafayette’s campus, as well as in Lafayette in general. Many bicyclists don't feel safe riding
down busy streets like Johnston. And a lot of people wonder, is it legal? Louisiana Law states
that every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the
roadway as practical, and shall be allowed to operate on the shoulder of a roadway. What the
state law does not allow is for a bicyclist to fail to exercise caution when passing a standing
vehicle or one traveling in the same direction.
